Don't debark your dog
[Feb 2010] - That's right, folks; the NY Times reports that folks have had their dog's vocal chords cut to keep them from barking, including the sick freak pictured at the link above. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn't pass judgment on somebody, but if you pay someone to cut your dog's vocal chords and you, Mr. Marder and the person performing the operation are both veterinarians and you both think this is OK, well, we're going to have to go ahead and call you sick fucks. We can respect that apartment living is not conducive to noisy dogs, but then, dogs probably shouldn't live in apartments, anyway.
Dr. Sharon L. Vanderlip a veterinarian in San Diego County for over 30 years, believes the debarking procedure is a good thing: "I think that in certain cases it can certainly save a dog from ending up being euthanized." OK, anyone that would euthanize a dog because of barking is a sick fuck. What rational person thinks, "that dog barks too much, better put it down." Sorry for the profanity in this post, but jeez! Sick fucks! You should never post when you're mad, but doubt we'll calm down about this one any time soon.

Bob Barker donates $1 mil to start Professorship in Animal Rights
Bob Barker gave Drury University (his alma matter) $1 million dollars to establish the Dorothy Jo Barker Professorship in Animal Rights. The program will consist of a course study on animal issues like cruelty and philosophy. Bob Barker, who hosted the Price is Right for 50 years and always ended the show by reminding the viewers to spay or neuter their pets - check out his final sign off here. It's a great job by Barker - when he's not out there snipping, he's giving to the community to promote awareness!

The Vick double standard
It's opening weekend in the NFL and many are outraged about Michael Vick's reinstatement and lucrative contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Consider the double standard of attacking Vick's crime and the slaughtering of more than 10 billion animals a year (not including fish) for food. Is it not to hypocritical to sit there and curse Vick (and he deserves it) while you're stuffing a hot dog in your mouth? GARY L. FRANCIONE wrote a great OpEd about this that's worth reading. Why do so many people think that one species of animal life and another is not? We hope you'll take a moment to ponder this 'food for thought!'

Go Vegan at Yankee Stadium
We hadn't even switched to vegan mode when we began our walk around the new Yankee Stadium, but things just kept jumping up at us - for one thing, the fruit stand right near the home plate gate (pretty sure that's gate 4) was a veritable cornucopia of fresh fruit. But the real shocker came when we found the Noodle Bowl at the Food Court - stir fry with tofu! And right next to that, vegetable sushi! It's pretty exciting to find these options, because you know there must be more lurking around the corner. We'll keep hunting, and you do the same! Good job by the Yankees to provide things outside the realm of the faux food and standard fattening ballpark junk food.
Check out our Virtual Tour of Yankee Stadium.

President Obama kills a fly
We know PETA is pissed that Obama killed a fly during an interview, but we're going to let it slide. Sure, we wish he'd caught it in a cup and released it outside, but we also understand that when bugs invade your home, even if its government housing, it can be a very disconcerting and even frightening experience. We wish he hadn't done it, but we're not going to censure him for it. Is it ridiculous to kill something for bothering you? Yes. Are flies annoying and known to carry disease? Yes. We hope the President will be nice next time, but since it didn't look premeditated, we're going to let it slide.

Tell NJ Governor Corzine to Say No to Sunday Hunting
You can help stop wildlife abuse by emailing Govenor Corzine and asking him to veto bill S802/A1669. You can email Governor Corzine here. Tell him you want him to veto S802/A1669. On the email page, select 'Natural Resources' and on the next page 'Fish, Game and Wildlife.' Make a difference and email today! You can read more from the Humane Society here.

Dear Governor Corzine,
I am writing to you today to urge you to veto S802/A1669, which would authorize bow hunting on Sundays. I am one of many vocal, voting constituents who are seriously concerned about the impacts the removal of this long-held prohibition would have on both people and animals.
Please, please veto this bill.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
[your name]

PETA protests KFC
As reported by NYU's Washington Square News, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals protested a Manhattan Kentucky Fried Chicken (we guess they picked the location randomly) because KFC tortures chickens, or whoever KFC gets their chickens from does... There's a shocker! We would say that killing someone for the purpose of eating them is torture, so yeah, way to go, PETA - KFC suppliers torture chickens. You're a bunch of regular Nancy Drews. And they sat a few bikini clad young ladies in some cages (see link above for photo) on a very cold day (probably why they look so disgruntled - it's not enough that they're mad about the chickens, but they're freezing to boot!) to prove their point, but we doubt this'll do much to reduce sales of extra crispy. But, as always, vote with your wallet - go to KFC and buy all their potato wedges - that'll show em! Check out kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour killed a hawk
Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour killed a hawk that was making too much noise for him while making a golf video as reported by the AP and posted on Yahoo!. The article says he's been charged with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, which carry a max penalty of a little over a year in jail and fines. We really hope this jackass serves some jail time and an example is made of him. An apology just isn't good enough; if he's not going to jail, we'd like to see him make a substantial donation to the Human Society or PETA. We're sick of famous people mistreating animals and getting the minimum penalties. We're also hoping that every time this guy's out on the course, every time he gets his car washed, ever time he sticks his fat head outside, he gets a big blob of bird crap on him. What a jackass.

Is interdietary dating taboo for you?
The NY Times has an article posted (here) which details different people's dietary practices (omnivores, vegetarians, vegans) and how they effect their dating life. We did a quick, informal survey amongst a small group and found that omnivores, vegetarians and vegans aren't that keen on dating outside their groups. We can understand omnivores getting board with the other food style and veggies and vegans being grossed out - but, the article referenced Anthony Bourdain's book, "Kitchen Confidential", in which he refers to vegans as a splinter cell of vegetarians and compares vegans to Hezbollah... OK, lets settle down there, Tony. We assure you, no group, no matter how odd you may find them, wants to be compared to a terrorist organization. We assume it's supposed to be ironic; vegans are nearly always animal rights activists or proponents, so to compare them to a group that is, shall we say, morally compromise when it comes to killing, is a bit going a bit too far... or at least we think so.

10 year old becomes vet
We won't talk about the emotional ramifications of being an animal doctor at 10 years old - we'll just say she's cute as a button! And, she's got plenty of time to pay off all of those pesky college loans.
Unfortunately, Yahoo dumped the clip - sorry!

Check your OJ
We've heard that the orange juice that contains calcium does so by incorporating fish oil into the mix. Never thought we'd have to read the ingredients on good ol OJ to drink vegetarian... Here's all we could find... tropicana.com | calorie-count.com forum

NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR US! Michael Vick gets only 23 months
Please join us in a collective boo.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Thanks if you participated.
ESPN has posted a story with some Michael Vick details, but let's leave that aside for a moment. Only 23 months? That's it? Shouldn't you get 2 years just for running an illegal business and "lying about it"? And you know they're going to let him out early for good behavior and the NFL will welcome him back if they think they'll profit one dollar. This, in a word, sucks. And if you head over to the ESPN article, the only photo they supplied of the crowd was of a small child holding a sign that read "Keep the faith" and bore Vick's number. Vick has the longest sentence of everyone sentenced so far (one more to go on Dec 14), but this is just not long enough. An example needs to be set and this was an opportunity to do so on the national stage. 23 months for murder and cruelty? Nice job, justice system.

Happy Thanksgiving!
If you had an alternative Thanksgiving like we did and not only didn't cook a turkey but had fake Turkey, than three cheers for the chef! Our fake turkey vender of choice was Veggie Heaven, a Chinese vegetarian restaurant with multiple New Jersey locations. We could have had Tofurky, but whatcha gonna do? The point is, we'd rather be friends with animals than eat them. The fake turkey was a bit disturbing in shape though... we really thought it was gonna be slices.

Animal Rights: Michael Vick to be sentenced December 10
And we're really critical of the elaborate wide receiver end zone celebrations...
Michael Vick has surrendered to the US Marshals (Tommy Lee Jones was not available for comment) in what appears to be an effort to curry favor with the court. We hope they confine him to a small cell with a large man named Bubba for a long time. And we do mean long. Read the story here.
