Giants Plaxico Burress Faces Felony Charges
As we all know, Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Bronx night club. We heard local radio WFAN sports talk host Mike Fancesa say that he had a source he trusted tell him that the club did not call the police but wanted to call an ambulance. Antonio Pierce, who was at the club with Burress, apparently pocketed the gun, gave the bounces the bullets and the club agreed to let them leave and sort it out themselves. Pierce then drove them back to Burress' New Jersey home, where they contacted someone in the Giants organization who told them to go to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and admit Burress under an assumed name, and all would be taken care of. The hospital also did not report the treatment of a gunshot wound, as they are legally obligated to. Burress was apparently given very good care, because he does not appear to be limping. We assume bystanders at the club reported the incident to the police or the press, but that's just an assumption - we don't know exactly how the authorities became aware of the scenario so quickly. It was bound to get out, a zillion people saw it...
We understand Plaxico Burress has been charged with class C felony charges, and that this particular type of felony weapons charge requires the prosecutors office to demonstrate that Burress intended to use the gun against someone, which seems impossible to prove, particularly since the gun was in his pants or pants pocket when it went off. We don't think he'll get away clean, but jail time seems unlikely - we think he'll end up paying an enormous fine - the city of New York sure could use the money!
On the field, Burress hasn't been a huge factor this year as hamstring injuries have limited his playing time, so the idea that Burress won't play for the rest of the year doesn't fill us with fear for the Giants offense. The Giants have a ton of offensive weapons (uhm, players... the Giants have a ton of offensive players), like the emergence of Domenik Hixon, or, as we prefer, DOMINANT Hixon, not to leave out Amani Toomer, rounding out two very good Giants wide receivers. Don't forget about tight end Kevin Boss, who made a big impact last year and has begun to find his way again this year. The Giants also have the best three headed running back monster in the game in the persons of Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward (who can also do a very good job catching the ball) and Ahmad Bradshaw. So, while this mess is a distraction, we don't think it hurts the Giants too much on the field.
