Welcome to our blog on the New York Jets 2009 season!
Jets season ends tomorrow
While our blog on the death of the New York Jets 2009 season may have been premature, we still don't think they can beat the Colts tomorrow. Just wanted to get that out there. We're thinking its going to be a Colts v Saints Super Bowl with the Saints as the winners.
New York Jets 2009 Season RIP
Sorry, Jets fans, but the 2009 season is over. We break it down this way: the New York Jets have a 4-5 record. We estimate they need at least 10 wins to make the playoffs. They have 7 games left in the 2009 season, including a game against the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. So, to get to 10 wins, they would need to go 6-1 through the remaining 7 game stretch, and we can't see them beating the Pats or the Colts after they lost to the Jaguars this past Sunday, so the best the could possibly go is 5-2, which is 1 win short of our 10 win goal for them, which doesn't necessarily guarantee them a playoff spot. Stick a fork in the Jets, they're done. You can blame whoever you want to, but the fact is, meaningful football for the Jets in the 2009 season is over.
Jets suffer ugly overtime loss to Buffalo Bills
It's tough to lose a game to the Buffalo Bills, who improve to 2-4 with their victory over the New York Jets. Their fans have come together to rent a billboard to express their discontent with the team... you don't want to lose to a team that has that kind of charisma going for it.
The Jets get to the second half, they have a decent 13-3 lead over the Bills, and it all goes to hell. The Jets don't score in the second half and end up losing in overtime and suddenly, their great start has dropped off to a 3-3 record. We hate to say we told you so, but these kind of things are going to happen to the Jets until their rebuilding and growing process yields the results their fans are desperate for. We think its coming, and coming soon - maybe as soon as next season. But not this year. Sorry, Jets fans - we think you're going to have to wait around a while longer.
Jets lose to Dolphins - or beat themselves, you pick
So do you want to give the Miami Dolphins credit for a hard fought, come from behind win, or do you want to chalk this loss up to the New York Jets not playing up to their potential? Did the Dolphins get their act together or did the Jets defense crumble? Rex Ryan would say the Jets crumbled. Many have raised the point that Rex Ryan could have called time out after the two minute warning and perhaps had enough time left on the clock to score after the Dolphins... Eh, who can say? The bottom line is the lost the game, and they've fallen from their 3-0 start to 3-2 in the unforgiving NFL that demands wins. The season is already a quarter over. Times a wastin!
Jets fall to superior team
"You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is: never try." Those words, spoken by Homer Simpson, might be a little harsh for this situation, but the message is clear: the Jets are a good team, but they probably aren't a great team.
Rookie quarterbacks are going to have some tough games. There will be growing pains. The problem is, the NFL has a short season and there is no time for mistakes. Mark Sanchez has talent - poise, presence, movement in the pocket, a good arm - OK, his ball security is highly questionable, but that's correctable, the only question is, how long will it take? You can't wait, everything depends on it. Loosing one game in the NFL is worse than an MLB team getting swept in a four game series. Sanchez could be the Jets quarterback for a long time, but it's not going to happen over night. It might sound like we're pinning the lose on him... and OK, yeah, we are. But, he's the quarterback. That's how it is; you're the leader. No one ever uses the expression, "OK, so who's going to running back this situation?" They say quarterback, and we all know why. But, have patience; we don't think Jets fans' faith in Mark Sanchez is misplaced.
On the brighter side, the Jets defense had a tremendous game. This is a big deal, because defense wins championships. Hang in there, folks. it might not happen for you this year, but we think its coming.
Jets lead division with 3-0 record
When you hear the buzz surrounding the New York Jets 3-0 start and see articles in the New York Daily News titled The New Broadway Joe, one might jump to the conclusion that the Jets are revamped and primed for a Super Bowl run. Is this possible? Certainly. Is it likely? Probably not. Jacob E. Osterhout, the author of the NYDN article is careful to caution Jets fans that while much has been made of New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez and there is reason to get excited, it's a little early to anoint him the next Joe Namoth, however misleading the title of the article may be.
Still, if Jets fans want to get overly optimistic, we say go for it. It's football, after all - they only play what, 18 games, 9 home games a year? Get excited while you can, because it'll be over before you know it. A 24-17 victory over the Titans last weekend is reason to get excited - in fact, any victory in the NFL is reason to get excited. It's hard to win NFL football games, after all. Naysayers might point out that Sanchez has thrown many balls that could have been intercepted but were dropped by the defense and that last year's Jets also started out hot before fizzling to an extremely disappointing finish and missing the playoffs entirely. But right now, for Jets fans, life is good. They've got a new coach, a new rookie quarterback and an improved defense and the are 3-0 - what else is there to talk about?
Jets beat Patriots
If you listened to much sports talk radio on Monday, you heard a lot of Jets fans saying that Tom Brady was done or the New England Patriots stink. It's easy to understand this mindset from NY Jets fans. Think about it. The Patriots have had nothing but success for year after year; even last year, when starting Quarterback Brady went down for the season, the Patriots still played well and made the playoffs while the Jets floundered after a great start and went home early. In the Jets fans' mind, it stands to reason that the only way the Jets could beat the Patriots was that if something incredible happened - like their star quarterback was not recovered from his injury and stinks now. What other logical explanation could their be for the Jets beating the Patriots? That's what we believe they're thinking. We think the Patriots didn't have a great offensive day and the Jets had a great defensive day; and one has something to do with the other!
