Central Park trees aren't mad at us!
The New York Times reported that Sasha J. Blair-Goldensohn, 33, was struck by a branch that fell out of tree in Central Park. The branch was four inches thick and fell 20 feet; it caused a gash in the man’s skull, damaged his upper vertebrae and caused a partial lung collapse.
We're shocked the NY Times reported this story. In a city of eight million people, things like this are going to happen every once in a while, as accidents will happen - unless its around a construction site, then accidents, apparently, will happen a lot, like when cranes randomly collapse. In any case, anyone who will stay out of the park because this happened is nuts, and so is the editor who thought it was a good idea to publish this story. If you will continue to wander around the park, but are worried you're going to get hit in the head, you are also nuts. As the article points out, there are 26,000 trees in Central Park - the odds of being under a branch when it breaks AND the branch being of significant size to injury you must be astronomical. True, the article also focuses on other fears of NYC residents: manhole covers, subway grates and rogue pigeons. Just remember - the real danger in New York City isn't the city, its the crazy people who live and work there, who forget to put the cover back on manholes (or the jackasses who are 'tweeting' and not watching where they're going - heard about that?), the jerks who don't bother to inspect the construction sites and the idiots who carry unregistered handguns and accidently shoot themselves in the leg. Oh well. Better him then us! [July 2009]

Six Flags Great Adventure is pretty good about opening new rides, but we were sad when we realized that The Dark Knight Coaster had replaced Batman & Robin: The Chiller, and after we rode the aforementioned coaster, we were down right pissed off. Read more...
