Mets sign Francisco Rodriguez KRod
The New York Mets have signed the best closer available in Francisco Rodriguez for a 3 year, $30+ million dollar deal. It's a really good deal for the Mets and sort of a downer for the other closers on the free agent market, or anyone who wanted to trade their closer (Seattle), because KRod's agent was saying he wanted 5 years, $75 million... but that kind of a deal is Mariano Rivera country, and as good as KRod is, and as great as his 60+ save season was last year, KRod is no Mariano Rivera, period.
Still, KRod is a very good pitcher. One could argue that he saved so many games last year because he had so many opportunities - the Angels offense was not especially potent (even after they added Mark Teixeria) and the Angels also had good starting pitchers, so there were save opportunities a plenty, but, KRod still had to go out there and close, and he did, nearly every time. Now, it was troubling to see his velocity went down between 2007 and 2008, and after all the high pressure innings he pitched last year, you have to be a bit worried about his health. He should have an easier time of it pitching in the National League, especially with at least 40 or so games against teams like the Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins. So good job by Mets GM Omar Miniya - he always gets it done during the off season - it's the regular season that needs improvement!
