Mets collapse again, won't make playoffs
Repeat after us: "It wasn't Willie Randolph's fault."
For a second year in a row, the Mets have coughed up a September division lead and will not make the playoffs - OK, we know they haven't been eliminated yet, but there are two games to go and they're a game behind in the wild card. It's over.
Why so pessimistic? Have the Mets given you any reason to believe in them this year? Not to mention the fact that their bullpen stinks and they are not especially adept at hitting in the clutch.
In an effort to save their season, manager Jerry Manual is tapping Johan Santana for a start on 3 days rest. We can't say we blame him - if he believes that nothing but a complete game, 1 earned run effort by his best starter can save them, we tend to agree. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, the Marlins will counter with their own 15 game winner, Ricky Nolasco. In short, they're screwed.
This year, the Mets have a built in excuse - "Billy Wagner got hurt and the rest of our bullpen stinks, so we had no chance. Oh yeah, and our GM, Omar Minaya, not only did nothing to strengthen our floundering bullpen, but also got a four year contract extension. Brilliant!" Jerry Manual has done a terrific job, but this team just doesn't have the killer instinct. If you can't bludgeon your way into the playoffs with their line up against the national league's extremely thin pitching (the Mets scored a combined 3 runs against the Washington Nationals in back to back loses on September 15 and 16 at DC), you stink. Even if they made it to the playoffs, they'd still get trounced out in the first round. Maybe Santana finds a way to win one game, more or less by himself... but it'd be futile. We'll see you next year, fellas - tell Minaya to go find you a closer... and an 8th inning guy... and a 7th inning guy... and a lefty... and a few extra starters...
