It's Complicated
4 out of 5
It's Complicated is a comedy, so it's OK that it strains credibility, and often; but this doesn't mean its not a lot of fun. With great performances from Alec Baldwin, Meryl Streep and Steve Martin, the movie is an attention holder although at 120 minutes, its a bit long for a romp. Alec Baldwin pretty much steals every scene he's in, and that's something when you consider he's sharring screen time with Meryl Streep, who this country needs to build a statue of, by the way. It's also pretty cool to see John Krasinski in another movie, who is quite the scene stealer himself. It's almost as if director Nancy Meyers didn't realize who she was getting in Krasinski, and once she did, she let him off the leash and told him to do whatever he wanted. Steve Martin reminds us what he's capable of; can you remember the last time you saw him in a credible movie? Martin turns in a good performance and we hope he continues to take rolls in movies like this so we don't have to be embarrassed to see his next flick. Meryl Streep can make anything believable and is the glue that keeps these great performances together. Streep could sell you the Brooklyn Bridge; she's that good. It's Complicated is a little long and probably won't hold up under repeated viewing, but its a solid comedy with great performances. And wow, never been to Santa Barbara, California before, but we're going now. Wow! Didn't think that was the US when the movie started!
