Slumdog Millionaire
Score: 4.5 out of 5
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of Jamal, Madhur and their fellow orphan Latika in an emerging India as Jamal recounts the story of his life which revolves around answering questions on the game show, Who wants to be a Millionaire?. We admit, Millionaire's involvement is part of the reason this film didn't get a five from us. As the movie rolls on, you might find it stretches credibility here and there, but the film maker is aware of it, to the point of a character remarking, "That sounds bizarrely credible." But, its quality film making and story telling, featuring well realized moments and fantastic capturing of the ugly side of life, perhaps in all its glory. Millionaire is a great story and it's very well done, particularly by its star, Dev Patel (who may be recognized from BBC's Skins fame) as Jamal K. Malik, who we thought might have received an Oscar nod for his performance, but competition is fierce this year with heavy weights like Sean Penn and Micky Rourke. Go see Slumdog Millionaire, it's several movies in one: a bio pic, a love story, a coming of age story, a tale of an emerging country on the world's stage... it's a lot of stuff, but its all good. Take a look, you won't regret it.

It's always a little strange when a movie wins best picture and none of the actors are nominated for an acting award. Sure, Slumdog was worth of the award and worthy of all the other awards it one, particularly Director, Cinematography, Film Editing and the music awards... we're not big fans of the adapted screenplay award... ooo, so you took someone else's art and translated it into a screenplay... so powerful! Sure, we know its easily to adapt a screenplay badly, but there's not much original creativity going on here, not much blood and sweat, so, we can't get too excited about that.
