Clinton and Obama debate in Pennsylvania
During the April 16 debate between Democratic presidential nominees Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama, we finally heard Clinton make the point we've been waiting for. There's an article in the NY Times that covers the debate pretty well and features the quote we think is long over due:
“I have a lot of baggage, and everybody has rummaged through it for years,” Mrs. Clinton said, drawing laughter. “And so therefore, I have, you know, an opportunity to come to this campaign with a very strong conviction and feeling that I will be able to withstand whatever the Republican sends our way.” [source]
This is, unfortunately, one of our chief arguments against Barack Obama's candidacy. We just don't think he can win. We're not fond of his short tenure in national politics and we wish he'd be a bit more specific when he makes those 'inspiring' speeches, but this is a real problem come summer time. Once
the race has come down to McCain and the Democratic nominee, the Republicans are going to come out full force. They are going to dig up (or create) things about the candidate you never dreamed of, and the shorter amount of time you've been in the game,
the more things they'll find (or create). Some fodder has already shown up - the California fund raiser remarks (which we didn't think was a big deal),
the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr comments and something about something he may or may not have done during high school that some may describe as 'poking smot.'
We believe the Reblicans would lay into Obama hard - not that they wouldn't do so against Clinton - we just think that
the public is going to suffer a lot more shock when it's someone they're less familiar with (and have idolized).
