Sleeping through the Olympics 2008 Beijing
Frankly, we can't recall an event we looked forward to with less enthusiasim than the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. History may indicate that this a country we would probably boycott, but China is one of the largest emerging ecconomies in the world, not to mention that the United States owes them a ton of money. In any case, thare are a ton of stories to cover, but we're just going to blow through it all here in one shot.

Pollution: Yeah, as it turns out, Beijing looks pretty polluted on TV. Also, we heard a bunch of cyclists had to drop out of a race because of the poor air quality and extreme heat. We understand that leading up to the games, Beijing tried a number of steps to reduce air pollution, including limiting car use depending on the last digit of your liscence plate - meaning, they had odd and even days. If your liscence place ended in 3 and it was an even day, then you're walking.

Food: Thinking going to Beijing might be your chance to sample some local cuisine? Not for US athletes. We read a long while ago in the New York Times that the US was shipping its own food over because they found that food (they tested a chicken breast) was so pumped full of steroids that anyone eating them would fail a drug test. Nice.

Events: Yeah, we know that Michael Phelps swimmer guy is going to break a ton of records and stuff, and that's great, but yeah, can't get too excited about this. Why? Don't care. Why not? Not sure... He swims fast... that's super. We like swimming, and we think its great exercise, but that's where it ends. Watching people swim? Not so much.

Basketball tournment? Pass. Baseball? Pass. We keep checking, hoping to be inspired, but so far, we'll stick with MLB for our summer sports entertainment.
