Family Guy

Welcome to our blog on the TV show Family Guy. The first three seasons of Family Guy were great, but the writing has taken a walk off a cliff since returning numerous years later for the fourth season after DVD sales of the first 3 seasons spawned a come back. Several painful seasons later, Family Guy is circling the creative drain as it confuses edgy comedy with lazy writing.

Do we have any education in TV reviewing? Nope, we just love TV. Well, sort of.

Palin Family is pissed at Family Guy
In yet another attempt to grab headlines, the Family Guy writing staff has pulled another zinger from their, 'Oh no we didn't!' file with the following from the twelfth episode of season eight, "Extra Large Medium," during which the Down syndrome girl Chris is dating is heard to remark, “My dad’s an accountant and my mom is the former governor of Alaska.”
So the Palin's took this as a shot at the youngest member of their misnamed brood, Trig. We're pretty sure that the joke is supposed to be on Ms. Palin, and the joke is supposed to be interpreted as only Sara Palin has children with Down syndrome. We're not saying it makes sense and it's definitely not funny, but we're pretty sure they were taking a shot at the former Governor of Alaska and not her infant son. Use your head, folks; its hard to zing someone when they're a baby! But this joke was written just to grab headlines and bring attention to a creatively fading show but writing a joke that was not even a little funny about a former politician who does nothing but provide comic GOLD with her every move and phrase - dude, Palin writes what she wants to talk about during Q&As on her hand, for crying out loud!
Both Family Guy and Palin are at fault here; Family Guy included a joke that wasn't funny and could be interpreted as insensitive and Sarah Palin responded to something she didn't need to respond to, but both Palin and Family Guy have become attention whores (see Palin's book, media tour and other crappy works and Family Guy's latest shameless reproductions of Star Wars, "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side") and its easy to see that they're both winners of some cheap publicity.

Family Guy
Family Guy used to be one of our favorite shows. What the hell happened? The show was at its best in the first 3 seasons, but its fallen far from grace. Once a fun, 80s obsessed crazier version of The Simpsons, Family Guy is now just a misshaped blob of pop culture with about as much relevance as the crap they parody. A great example is the fourteenth episode of the seventh season of Family Guy, "We Love You, Conrad," during which Brian starts dating The Hills "star" Lauren Conrad. First question: 'What the hell is The Hills?' Second Question: 'Who the hell is Lauren Conrad?' Family Guy used to appeal to folks who didn't have to be in the know about the latest pop culture rage, but bringing in someone from a reality show is clearly a ratings grab. It's particularly confusing when they bring in someone that the audience for Family Guy has little chance of recognizing. In what we assume was an effort to fill time, they blatantly act out a few pages from Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan for no reason we're aware of. Then there was that really weird Ted-Danson-has-a-big-forehead joke that we won't waste your time with... but if you could tell US what the hell that is supposed to mean, we sure would appreciate it. In fact, we encourage you to take a look at that link, because it sums up what Family Guy (after Season 3) is all about: [insert explanation here] and just randomly acting out pages of other people's scripts.
The Stewie character is a prime example of the show's collapse: his character used to be a matricidal maniac bent on world domination; now, he's gay. The former is interesting, the latter is not. There are lots of gay people, but Stewie was the only matricidal maniac baby bent on world domination. Can the writers of Family Guy not see the difference between Stewie plotting to take over the world and kill his mom and making a bunch of half ass gay jokes? Maybe the greater Seth McFarlane creative team is stretched too thin over 3 shows (The Cleveland Show, American Dad), but somewhere along the line, the writing got really lazy.
